MANUSCRITO

The Manuscrito Exhibition maintains a strong connection to home, even from a distance of 2,049 miles. Raquel Silva Gorbea presents a series of drawings that vividly capture the essence of her home, transforming memories into tangible forms. This transition from digital storage to physical artwork serves as a poignant reflection of memory.

Raquel employs her unique Raquelínea drawing technique, characterized by its calligraphic qualities. This method becomes the artistic vehicle through which she reimagines the original purpose of Illuminated Scripts, using them metaphorically in her pieces. Historically, Illuminated Scripts were utilized to record and preserve devotions and ideas across time. In her exhibition, Raquel appropriates this concept to preserve the "devotions" of her island home.

The animals depicted in Raquel's drawings are commonplace in Puerto Rico, yet they take on an extraordinary presence when rendered on a large scale, evoking the essence of the island from over 2,000 miles away. Many of these images are sourced from photographs exchanged in her family's WhatsApp chat. Each drawing is meticulously crafted using ink, nickel, and zinc on Stonehenge paper, resulting in a compelling visual narrative.
