Artworks by
Raquel Silva
The artwork I create is about navigating expectations of contemporary Puerto Rican identity by visually re-interpreting perceptions of my own lived experiences. I accomplish this by developing a commercial body of work employing my own linework technique and figurative style, where I render only necessary areas with pen, allowing the composition to harmonize with empty space.
All my work, regardless of the medium, has a foundation in drawing. For instance, if it's made with paint, it will resemble a drawing. I believe that abstraction and figuration need to work together in my interdisciplinary practice. I will use any medium as long as it is intentional with the message and context within a body of work. I work on multiple bodies of work simultaneously. For me, the most important aspect of the viewer's perception is the first impression of the artwork and what is conveyed during that initial glance. I strive to achieve accuracy in that first impression when creating my work; that process is what makes it most exciting.
